Street Hiphop and graffiti “Old Skool Jam Wall” in Kathmandu.
The Old School Jam Walls in Kathmandu, Nepal, are a unique cultural phenomenon that has been a part of the city. These walls, originally from hip-hop culture and graffiti art, have evolved into platforms for artists to showcase their talent and make powerful statements. The walls not only serve as artistic outlets but also play a crucial role in preserving Nepal’s cultural identity by blending traditional Nepali motifs with contemporary influences.
There are many artworks and artists on the Jam Wall. We can see the face of Afrika Bambaataa, best known as a DJ, rapper, and producer from New York City. Additionally, there are prominent artworks featuring Late Yama Buddha and Lauryn Hill, a highly acclaimed American singer, rapper, songwriter, and actress. Following them is Kool Herc, known as the first DJ for the hip-hop community. Similarly, NepHop figures such as Professor Trix, Uniq Poet, Nishanta Gauchan, and Manoj Lama are also represented and the legend John Lennon.
Professor Trix, Nishanta Gauchan, and Manoj Lama play important roles in this street art project known as the Old Skool Jam Wall.
Despite facing challenges from authorities concerned with urban aesthetics and cleanliness, grassroots movements and community initiatives have emerged to protect and promote these art spaces.
The future of Kathmandu’s street art scene remains uncertain, but the growing recognition of street art as a legitimate form of expression and tourism attraction provides hope for their survival.
